Meta announced in an official blog that Facebook Dating, the dating feature of her social software Facebook, is a new AI dynamic. This upgrade includes a smart AI assistant and a surprise match-making mechanism called “Meet Cute” (romantic encounter), designed to help users escape the sense of fatigue that slips over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again in big data.

The core highlight of the AI dating assistant is this in-house chat robot AI assistant, who is like a sweet “Red Mother” who helps users to locate potential matches through natural language conversations. Users need only enter simple tips, and AI will generate customized recommendations based on a large user library that scans Facebook based on open information (e.g. interest, location, work). Unlike the passive delivery of traditional algorithms, the assistant can also proactively optimize the user’s personal data. Technically, AI is driven by Meta’s own Llama-language model, which ensures efficient and privacy-friendly response – using only publicly available information authorized by the user and avoiding the disclosure of sensitive data. In its bulletin, Meta’s product manager stressed: “We want AI to make dating easier and more interesting, helping users to leapfrog the needless slides and run straight to the real match.” This feature will be rolled out in the United States and Canada, starting with small-scale testing, with an estimated 80 per cent coverage of active users.

The “Meet Cute” function, which automatically pushes a “surprising match” every week, is selected by a personalized algorithm based on user preferences, mutual friends and an interactive history. Users can open a chat directly, or a key “pass” refuses; if interested, more information can be unlocked. It is inspired by the “accidental encounters” in the romantic comedy and is designed to inject fresh and unexpected surprises and to avoid users being drawn into “brush-screen” dating slippage fatigue. Meta revealed that users can quit at any time and will explore the daily or biweekly delivery options to fit the different rhythms. According to Business Insider, about 70 per cent of date app users admitted having given up their use for oversliding. Meta uses this powerful bridge to access Facebook’s core social attributes — such as the participation of a group or event of common interest — to make matching more “terrestrial gas”. Test data indicate a 12 per cent increase in the success rate of early bird users and a 30 per cent higher chat opening than the traditional slide.

As a free dating service introduced in 2019, Facebook Dating has been selling for the purpose of integrating social networking data, but the size of its users remains strong in the face of intense competition from professional players such as Tinder and Hinge. The AI infusion was seen as a key move to capture the share of the dating market by using Meta’s own Llama model. According to official data, the number of matches among young users aged 18 to 29 has increased by 10 per cent over the same period, with hundreds of thousands of people creating information in the United States and Canada every month, but active users (DAU) are only at millions of levels, far below the 50 million in Tinder and 10 million in Hinge. This update may help move Facebook Dating from a “subordinate function” to independent competitiveness.
